Laptop Lending Library Job Aids
-
To support the use of the Laptop Lending Library, the district has created several job aids to help with tasks related to using the laptop. Two tasks that are paramount for using the laptops are connecting to Wi-Fi, if necessary, and saving work to the student's OneDrive account. The provided job aids are designed to help with these tasks. One important tip is to remember to restart your computer when changing locations. This allows the laptop to start fresh and connect more easily to your home Wi-Fi. Ofterntmes, the turn off and turn back on again process will solve many common connection issues.
Connecting to Wi-Fi or a Hotspot
The devices are configured to connect to Wi-Fi or a hotspot. No matter how the device connects to the Internet, either by private or public connection, students are still required to abide by the Fort Bend ISD acceptable use policy for online access. The laptops also run any Internet activity through the district's Global Protect filter.
Wi-Fi Locations
When looking for locations with Wi-Fi access, there are a few recommended guidelines.
1. Remember that when accessing free Wi-Fi at a restaurant or other location that you are doing so as a guest. Please be respectful of the establishment and conduct oneself in the same manner as at school.
2. Only access Wi-Fi from a location you know or can trust. "Open" hotspots that just appear in the WiFi window should be avoided if not recognized. Establishments may have a sign posted or you may have to ask for this information.
3. Public libraries usually offer free Wi-Fi. For locations near you, please check out libraries in your area.
Student OneDrive Account
The Laptop Lending Library devices are designed for students to do most of their work in the cloud or online. Remember that any work that is saved to the laptop could be removed or deleted when the laptop is returned. All work should be saved to the student's OneDrive account or an external source other than the laptop. OneDrive may be accessed through the students Classlink account.
Reminder of Key Usage Guidelines (summary of agreed-upon Laptop Agreement)
- Laptop and Hotspot must be used for academic purposes.
- Must follow district AUP for use of all equipment
- Charge device if battery is below 50%
- Do not leave device in car or store other items on top of or in the bag with the laptop.
