  • A Day in the Life of a High School Senior

    by MacKenzie Matthews, HHS

Today I woke up wondering if today is the day that I find out whether or not I got accepted to University of Texas. All kinds of thoughts are racing through my mind. What will my friends think? What will my parents think? What's my backup plan? Are all Seniors as scared as I am? This college application thing is TOUGH!

But on to school I go. I drive this year. Thank goodness. The $45 parking lot fee is a bit much though. And some of these new drivers need to go back to Drivers Ed. I don't need another ding in my car door. Period. And as long as I am at it, no one wants to hear them peel out by the football field at 7am in the morning. That sound is worse than nails on a chalkboard. And why burn rubber and damage your car? Not me!

Bye cell phone, time to go up. I walk in the cafeteria side door of the school and I immediately am greeted by my friends, all of them shouting way too loud for 7am about receiving college acceptance letters. Will I be receiving one today too? Oh, I hope so. I hope I hope I hope. How can I focus on classes anymore? My future is undetermined. My parents keep asking every day, "Have you received anything?" And I just worry, worry, worry about whether or not my email works correctly. Focused in box or Other? Junk? Trash? Clutter? Email working? Which email did I put down on the application? Did I spell it correctly? Is the wifi working? UGGGHHHHH! The days of my parents receiving snail mail were so much simpler for college acceptance or denial. I guess they did have to just wait too. But at least the mailman was reliable.

Classes done. Time for after school practice for theater. We're producing the musical Grease. Pretty funny when you think about it--a story about a couple in their Senior year and uncertainty about the future. I wonder how Danny and Sandy would react to seeing email today.

It's time to go home. Home. Home is where the heart is. And my email. Wish me luck!
