District of Innovation
-
House Bill 1842, passed by the 84th Legislature, provides local school districts the flexibility afforded to open enrollment charter schools. The District of Innovation designation allows Fort Bend ISD autonomy from specified state requirements within the Texas Education Code in order to invoke innovative solutions on behalf of students and staff.
The Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees approved a resolution on October 17, 2016 to initiate the process to become a District of Innovation. The Board of Trustees adopted the Local Innovation Plan on March 27, 2017, which included exemptions from certain state requirements in the areas of the School Calendar, Teacher Certification and Minimum Attendance for Class Credit or Final Grade. The District of Innovation plan is valid for five years, starting with the 2017-18 school year, and is effective through the end of the 2021-22 school year.
On February 14, 2022, the Board approved a renewal plan which will be valid for an additional five years which begins July 1, 2022 and ends June 30, 2027.
