Coding Camp
-
Coding Camp (formally Scratch Day) is a virtual event open to FBISD students in grades K-8 and designed to help students to build creatively, reason systematically and apply computational thinking skills while learning how to code.
This year the event will be held virtually with students using Teams, Schoology, and coding programs such as Scratch to practice coding skills. There will be workshops for all levels of users that allow students to either learn the basics of coding or go more in-depth with topics such as the creation of games and animations.
Registration related to the Coding Camp may be found at the bottom of this page, but first we would like to share additional key information about the event so that you can be prepared and decide if you would like to register your student to attend. Be sure to also follow us on Twitter @FBISDSTEM.
Coding Camp FAQ's
-
When is the event?
Coding Camp is December 5, 2020 from 9:00 to 12:00. This is a virtual event using Microsoft Teams and Schoology accounts for FBISD students.
-
Will my student need a device to attend?
Yes, your child will need to have a device that can access Teams, Schoology, and the Scratch website. If you do not have access to a device, please check with your campus to see if one may be checked out for the event.
-
What does my student need for Scratch?
Scratch is a free coding platform that the district uses with students in Coding Clubs and for competitions. Campers in grades 3-8 will need an account. If they have attended coding events in the past, been part of a coding club on their campus, or have coded on their own, they may already have a Scratch account. If not, a free account may be set up through the Scratch Account Page. This must be done before the day of the event.

What does my student need for the event?
After you register, you will receive an email with event details. Here are some highlights that will help you know what to expect.
- You will want to make sure your student is comfortable navigating between multiple screens on a device.
- Students will join camp using Teams (link will be in Schoology course).
- Students will access a Schoology course for resources.
- Students will apply their learning using Scratch.
- Though not necessary, a secondary screen or even device that students can use for the coding part while viewing the learning on Teams can make it easier for the student to navigate the camp.
- You will want to make sure your student is comfortable navigating between multiple screens on a device.
-
Where is the Schoology course?
The course code will be shared in the confirmation email.
-
Can I register more than one student?
Yes, you may register multiple students but only one student may be registered at a time through the registration system.
- The reason for this is that during the registration process we need to collect grade level and selection of the learning pathway for the students. The system may only do that individually.
- Please just reuse the link and same parent email if registering multiple students.
-
May I register students from another district or private school?
As the students will need to access Teams and Schoology, students from outside of FBISD will not be able to attend as these are internal sites that require FBISD credentials to access.
-
Pathways? What does that mean and what are they?
The camp is divided into three grade bands - K-2, 3-5, and 6-8. Within the 3-5 and 6-8 bands, student will identify their level of coding knowledge or what they are interested in learning to code. For K-2, most students are at a beginning level and will be grouped by grade level. Below is a tentative overview of the paths. Depending on the number of registrations received, some paths may need to be shifted or combined, but we will do our best to accommodate student requests.
K-2: Divided by grade level
3-5: There will be three paths to choose from:
Path 1 - Beginner -If you have never coded before, this is the best path to select.
Path 2 - Intermediate - If you have done some coding lessons, either on Scratch, Code.org or on other coding sites and are ready to pull it together into a project.
Path 3 - Advanced - If you have competed in past coding challenges or have coded complete projects, this path will help add to your skills set.
6-8: There will be four paths to choose from:
Path 1 - Microbits - Combine the power of code with the fascination of creating programs that use lights and sound!
Path 2 - Beginner -If you have never coded before this is the best path to begin.
Path 3 - Animation - If you have done basic coding, this path will help you develop an animation project with a strong story, sound, and backgrounds.
Path 4 - Video Game - If you have a strong coding background, video games are the next challenge as they require multiple interactions and levels of coding.
Coding Camp Registration
-
Please use the link below to register for coding camp. The parent email will be used for the confirmation and updates. For the student information, the student data and selected paths will be used to place in the correct learning for the camp. After completing registration, a confirmation email will be sent with details about the camp to the parent email.
Remember, a separate registration must be completed for each student that will be attending.
Once all registration spots are filled a wait list will be generated by the system, if a spot becomes available an email will be sent from the system that gives 24 hours to claim the open spot. Being on the wait list does not guarantee that a spot will become available but we will try to accommodate as many campers as possible while still ensuring a productive learning environment for all.
