Are you enrolled in an Alternative Certification Program (ACP) and interested in a full-time teaching position while you complete your certification requirements? If so, you may be eligible for an Instructional Apprentice position within Fort Bend ISD!
FBISD’s Instructional Apprentice positions offer ACP program participants with the opportunity to teach full-time during the 2023-24 school year while they complete their ACP program. All Instructional Apprentices will receive ongoing, job-embedded support throughout the year through a campus-provided mentor.
Instructional Apprentice Requirements
To be eligible for an Instructional Apprentice position, candidates must:
- Hold a Bachelor’s Degree,
- Provide an Acceptance Letter from a teacher Alternative Certification Program (preferred acceptance within the last 12 months),
- Be actively working to complete all modules and a plan for certification assessment completion
- Fully commit to complete their ACP requirements and obtain a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) as soon as possible, but no later than March 18, 2024.
- Note: Experience in teaching and working with children is preferred.

Instructional Apprentices positions are full-time, exempt positions and are medical-benefits eligible.
Recent university graduates who have completed their bachelor's degree in education and who have completed their student teaching practicum, but who have assessments pending, may also be eligible for an Instructional Apprentice position in Fort Bend ISD while they complete their standard certification. How do I know which campus is hiring an Instructional Apprentice and how do I reach out to campus leaders to express interest?
- Current FBISD employees must inquire with their campus leader regarding campus opportunities. Current FBISD candidates may also reach out to campus leaders at other schools of interest with an email that contains a letter of introduction, resume, and Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from an ACP program. Note: To be considered for campus positions, a candidate’s LOA must be aligned to the vacant position’s certification requirements. For example, to be considered for an English position at the middle school level, the candidate’s LOA must align to ELAR 4-8 with STR certification.
- External candidates may send an email to the Talent Acquisition team with a resume and Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from an ACP program. The team will forward candidate information to campus leaders based upon the candidate’s indicated schools of interest.
If interviewed and recommended by a campus when do I start?
- Human Resources will contact candidates directly to officially offer the position and assign an official start date once all conditions have been met.
- To ensure timely processing of all applications, candidates should make sure the following are attached to their application:
- Official transcripts with confirmation of a bachelor’s degree,
- The Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from an ACP program with approved certification(s)
What are the expectations of this position during the 2023-24 school year?
- The Instructional Apprentice position is a temporary position to help candidates reach the goal of becoming a certified teacher in Texas. Instructional Apprentices must actively complete the Alternative Certification Program (ACP) requirements to obtain a Statement of Eligibility (SOE).
- Instructional Apprentices will function as the teacher of record in the classroom and will be held to the same standards as a teacher. Instructional Apprentices are required to participate in after school meetings and activities, Professional Development (PD), Professional Learning Communities (PLC ) days and all duties assigned to other teachers. Please review essential duties and responsibilities on the job description before applying.
- Campus leaders will evaluate Instructional Apprentices using the same tool used to evaluate all other teachers: Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System (T-TESS) upon completion of a T-TESS Orientation program.
- Instead of a Chapter 21 contract, Instructional Apprentices must sign an employment agreement that outlines all program requirements, including the requirement to receive a Statement of Eligibility as soon as possible and no later than March 18, 2024.
- Instructional Apprentices may interview with campuses ONLY if fully committed to completing teacher certification requirements within the timeframe established by FBISD.
What happens if I do not obtain a Statement of Eligibility (SOE) by the agreed date on the Employment Agreement?
- Instructional Apprentices without a SOE by March 18, 2024 will not return to the same position for the 2024-25 school year.
- Instructional Apprentices who acquire a SOE after the established date may be considered for a different teaching location, pending position vacancies.
- Instructional Apprentices may move into a substitute or an instructional aide position, while continuing pursuit of credentials.
What happens if I obtain my SOE before the March 18, 2024, established date?
- The instructional apprentice must notify the campus leader to initiate a change form.
- Upon receipt of the change form, HR will make an official offer for a teaching position and will establish a date to sign a Chapter 21 contract.
