Questions and Answers - Part-Time Teachers
-
How many hours will I work as a part-time teacher?
Part-time teachers are required to work a regular schedule of 18.75 hours a week and 3.75 hours a day, either in the morning or afternoon. Schedules will be determined and managed by their campus principal.
All part-time teachers will be expected to participate in professional development, meetings and other extracurricular activities (open houses, parent/teacher conferences, etc.) as determined by the principal without additional compensation.
-
Will part-time teachers be eligible for FBISD benefits?
Yes. Part-time teachers are eligible to enroll in any Fort Bend ISD employee benefits program. Benefits will be effective on the first of the month following their start date.
Upon hire, teachers must enroll in the desired insurance and benefit plan within 30 days from your first day of employment.
Note: Based eligibility requirements and the number of hours worked, part-time teachers will not be eligible for medical leave, such as Family and Medical Leave Act (FLMA) or Temporary Disability Leave (TDL).
-
Will part-time teachers receive a Chapter 21 contract?
Positions requiring an average of fewer than 4 hours per day in an academic instructional setting do not require Chapter 21 contracts, even if the employee is certified in the content area.
-
I want to work at a particular campus(es) in Fort Bend ISD. How will I know if a part-time teaching position is available at the campus(es)?
Candidates who are interested in part-time positions should apply to the district-wide posting. Principals looking to hire PT teachers will hire from the district-wide posting.
The availability of part-time positions at a particular campus will be determined by campus administrators, should they have this unique need at their campus.
-
Are part-time teachers considered exempt or non-exempt employees?
A teacher, regardless of the number of hours worked, is an exempt employee. See Fair Labor Standards law 29 C.F.R. § 541.301.
-
Am I required to attend PD and meetings outside of the school day?
Yes. As an exempt employee, Part Time teachers will be expected to participate in professional development, meetings and other activities as determined by the principal.
-
What is my compensation rate and how often will I get paid?
Part-time teachers will be placed in the appropriate step on our current teacher pay scale (P7) as determined by their years of teaching experience and receive an annual salary that is half of the amount of their full-time counterparts.
A teacher’s compensation rate will be prorated in alignment to the school district’s teacher salary schedule, including stipends.
-
If I work more than my 18.75 hours, will I receive additional compensation?
Exempt employees are not entitled to overtime pay. It is an expectation that all part-time teachers participate in professional development, meetings and other extracurricular activities (open houses, parent/teacher conferences, etc.) as determined by the principal.
-
How does this position differ from a long-term certified substitute teacher?
Long-term substitutes are required to work for the entire school day for the duration of their assignment and are not eligible for benefits. Part-time teachers will work half-days and are eligible for benefits, including TRS and healthcare.
-
Will part-time teachers be evaluated using the T-TESS instrument?
Yes. Part-time teachers will need to attend a T-TESS orientation and will be evaluated by campus leaders.
-
Will part-time teachers be eligible for any paid time off?
Part-time teachers will receive entitlements that are equivalent to half the amount of their full-time counterparts, pro-rated based on the number of days worked.
For example, a full-time teacher will receive 5 local sick days and 5 state personal days, so a part-time teacher will receive 2.5 local sick and 2.5 state personal days.
-
Am I guaranteed a part-time position every school year?
Employment for future years will be determined at the campus level, following the annual review of student enrollment, staffing guidelines, and the individual campus’ needs.
