Education and Awareness

  • Fort Bend Independent School District, is committed to educating our students, staff, and community about the discovery of the Sugar Land 95 and system of convict leasing. We believe by publically sharing this information related to the history, lives, and deaths of individuals impacted by the convict leasing system, that we can bring awareness to the racial injustices of the past and to properly memorialize the Sugar Land 95 in the future.

Fort Bend ISD is proud to share this information related to an important, yet often overlooked, part of American History with our community. As an effort to educate the masses, we offer a educational presentation titled "Found and Not Forgotten: the Sugar Land 95". This presentation is based off the extensive research outlined in the final report Back to Bondage: Forced Labor in Post Reconstruction Era Texas, and is delivered by Chassidy Olainu-Alade. Chassidy was a former social studies teacher in FBISD, who later served as the lead Social Studies Coordinator. During the time of the discovery, Chassidy assisted the district in the development of the local standard to address the system of convict leasing and other educational programs related to the Sugar Land 95 discovery.
