In 2018, construction crews discovered the first human remains at the site of the James Reese Career and Technical Center. After years of excavation, exhumation, and analysis, the remains of the 95 individuals found at the site were permanently laid to rest. Hidden for decades, and forgotten by history, the story of the Sugar Land 95 is being reclaimed, and Fort Bend ISD and its Board of Trustees is committed to honouring this monumental discovery. The Sugar Land 95 will never be forgotten again.

But there is still more work to be done. The District’s efforts are two-fold: to memorialize the 95 individuals found and to educate others on the discovery and its place in local, state and national history. Our goals advance our educational outreach and create of a place of remembrance and reflection for our students and our community to learn about the discovery.

The District is committed to achieving its long-term goals and we need your support.

We appreciate the generosity of the community as we fulfill our promise to honor the individuals impacted by the system of convict leasing and to preserve the Bullhead Convict Labor Camp Cemetery as a historic site for generations to come.

  • Support Ongoing DNA Analysis and Studies

In the fall of 2019, the Texas Historical Commission approved a research proposal for the extraction and analysis of ancient DNA to be conducted by the Principal Research Group. Pursuant to that permit, TARL forwarded samples to a respected geneticist at the University of Connecticut for genetic analysis.

Researchers have secured funding for the first batch of DNA extractions. Additional funding will be needed to fund the remaining DNA extractions, analysis, comparisons to existing databases, public outreach, and genealogical studies. .

Visit https://www.principalresearchgroup.org/donate to support these important studies.

Fort Bend ISD is not directing this fundraising campaign nor permitted to conduct ancient DNA analysis.
