• College Admissions Exams

College Admissions tests provide colleges a way to compare applicant academic strengths. The SAT and ACT are just one aspect of the college admissions process. Please remember that scores alone will not guarantee admissions or rejection. If you are planning to attend a 2-year college, please note that they do not require standarized test scores for admissions.

It is important to plan ahead when it comes to the SAT and ACT. The BEST time to test is during the spring semester of 11th grade and the summer before your Senior year of high school.

*Because of COVID-19, some colleges have opted to waive the SAT/ACT requirement. Students who choose to apply this way, as a "test optional" candidate, will need to ensure they submit any extra documentation that is required.

The TSI Assessment (TSIA) is part of the Texas Success Initiative program designed to help your college or university determine if you are ready for college-level coursework in the areas of reading, writing, and math. TSIA is a placement assessment and does not have any bearing on college admissions.

    • SAT & ACT

The ACT and SAT are standardized tests widely used by American college admissions as ONE component for assessment of an applicant's readiness for university studies. Most colleges accept scores from either or both exams. In addition, the scores are sometimes used to determine awards of scholarships and grants.

      Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

Students attending Texas public institutions of higher education must be in compliance with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), as of fall 2003 (Texas Education Code §51.3062) in order to enroll in public institutions of higher education. The law requires all entering college students to be assessed for college readiness in reading, mathematics and writing unless the student qualifies for an exemption. Each student who fails to meet the minimum passing standard of the exam offered by the institution must be placed in a developmental education program designed to help the student achieve college readiness.

Which Student must take a TSI Assessment (TSIA2)?

Unless exempt, a student who is entering a Texas college or university must take a TSIA2 exam and earn a score at or above the college-ready benchmark in order to enroll in credit bearing courses. A student may be exempt, or partially-exempt, from taking TSIA2 by meeting college-readiness scores on either SAT or ACT exam.

    • ASVAB Career Exploration Program

Per Texas law, schools are required to offer the ASVAB CEP exam to students in grades 10-12.  While it is true that a student who wishes to enlist in any military branch of service after high school must take the ASVAB, taking ASVAB CEP does not obligate a student to enter the military, nor does it obligate a student to speak to a recruiter.

After taking the ASVAB CEP, a student will have access to a career exploration program that can be beneficial in helping to decide what career path might be best suited to him/her, and help to narrow down choices in college or vocational schools after high school.

For more information about the ASVAB CEP, you can explore their webpage here or visit with your CCR Advisor at school.
