Mr. Joe Garcia

Mr. Joe Garcia currently serves as Director of Orchestras at Elkins High School, where he teaches intermediate and advance string classes. Originally from the Dallas area, Mr. Garcia earned the Bachelor in Music with Teacher Certification and Masters of Music Education at Texas Tech University.

 

Mr. Garcia’s former teachers include Barbara Allen, Kirsten Yon, and Annie Chalex-Boyle. During his time at Texas Tech, he was a part of many wonderful programs and ensembles including the University Symphony Orchestra, World Music Ensemble, and chamber ensembles. He has performed with the Midland-Odessa Symphony Orchestra, Big Spring Symphony, and more recently the Brazosport Symphony Orchestra. A lover of world music, Mr. Garcia has also performed in Mariachi groups and Tango ensembles.

 

Mr. Garcia will be entering his 13th year of teaching public school focusing primarily on the high school orchestral experience, teaching 6th through 12th grade students in Lubbock, Dallas,  and Houston areas. Before his appointment at Elkins HS, he served as the Director of Orchestras at Sugar Land MS. He has also served as the Assistant Orchestra Director at Fort Settlement MS. Mr. Garcia’s orchestras have consistently earned Sweepstakes ratings at UIL from the Varsity level to the Sub Non Varsity level. SLMS Orchestras have won Best in Class and Best Overall awards at regional Director’s Choice Festivals. Students from Mr. Garcia’s private studio consistently earn Superior ratings at solo contests and earn spots in All-Region Orchestras and Houston Youth Symphony.

 

In previous years, Mr. Garcia has led the district wide FBISD Orchestra Summer Camp which promotes retention and provides access to performing opportunities for students in FBISD. Mr. Garcia is also a sought after clinician and adjudicator in preparing orchestras for Pre-UIL, UIL, and State and National Conventions. He remains active in professional organizations including the Texas Music Educators Association, The Texas Orchestra Directors Association, The American String Teachers Association, and The National Association of Music Education.

 

Mr. Garcia has also served as the Middle School Orchestra Facilitator for Fort Bend ISD and was an active participant and leader in a grading pilot at Sugar Land MS focusing on maximizing student growth and ownership using a standards based grading system. Mr. Garcia’s interested include a passion for learning, the culinary experience, and current events.
