The following list of organizations that provide extracurricular music study and performance options in addition to your school orchestra program.
Signing up your student to participate in these organizations is an excellent way to help your student continue their musical growth. It keeps students learning and engaged in many of the necessary musical skills (orchestral, small ensemble, and solo) that help ensure that their instrument skills are being developed on all sides. Take a look at the descriptions and schedules to find which one may be right for you. If you have any questions, please ask your directors.

AFA Texas
From the AFA website:
"Each season, AFA serves over 2,000 young musicians, offers over 40,000 hours of classroom instruction, and presents nearly 50 free performances throughout the greater Houston metro area. AFA’s work in our community is divided into three main program areas:
Engage AFA programs present a broad range of classroom-based residencies, clinics and master classes in area schools that enhance school curricula and impact potentially underserved communities through innovative, customized programming.
The AFA Chamber Music Academy, Composition Studies, and Houston Girls Chorus make up AFA’s ENSEMBLES AND INSTRUCTION programs offering unique learning opportunities in the fall and spring semesters that challenge young musicians at their next level of musical learning and accomplishment.
AFA’s flagship program, the SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL offers intensive, challenging, multi-week experiences for vocalists, instrumentalists, pianists and composers, serving as many as 500 students in grades 4-12 each year.

Houston Youth Symphony
It is the mission of the Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) to recruit, educate, develop, and nurture young musicians and provide them the opportunity to train under professional musicians and perform in professionally conducted concerts. The HYS program offers five orchestras for musicians of various skill levels, placed throuhg a competitive audition process.

Virtuosi of Houston, Young Artists Chamber and Jazz Orchestras
From their website:
"Virtuosi of Houston was formed to create a pre-professional climate and performance opportunities for Houston’s most focused young musicians (11 – 18 years of age) and to bring an expanded repertoire of chamber orchestra works to Houston audiences. A chamber orchestra with only 50-60 musicians, Virtuosi of Houston makes it possible for each musician to experience increased confidence, leadership, responsibility, and performance skills to move their musical ability to a higher level."
