Purpose:
I became a teacher to motivate students to be their best versions of themselves by instilling a growth mindset. I believe that all students have a choice in their decisions, but it's up to us to help them foresee the possible outcomes of their decisions.
About My Educational Journey:
It is my 1st year at Willowridge HS but my 5th year in education. I started out as a substitute teacher in Alief ISD because all of my family went to school in Alief except my siblings. So it was refreshing to be able to work in the various schools that my family members were educated in. I was quickly promoted to being a SPED paraprofessional since I had a knack for motivating students to complete assignments and cater to their learning styles. I was paired with the science department, where we were able to create dynamic lessons, including rapping about formulas, so students could remember it for their tests. Plus, I was paired with the Social Studies department where, the teachers and I collaborated on unique study guides and note-taking processes. I enjoyed my time in Alief so much that I pursued my certificate during COVID.
My first year as a teacher was a small elementary charter school in Texas Serenity Academy ISD. We were online, then hybrid, and transitioned into full-time in-person lessons all in one year. I have had the experience of being able to adapt to any challenges as a PE teacher. Most importantly, this school taught me what community involvement looked like. We served Thanksgiving baskets and delivered them to the students' families that didn't have transportation, created their first ever Christmas program to uplift their spirits, prepped to-go meals for students to be able to eat after school, brought in an after-school music & fine arts program, and so much more. With little to no funding, we made the impossible possible for the students every single time. Due to working here, I had the opportunity to complete a 6-week all-inclusive professional development trainings in Orlando, FL over the summer through YES, Inc. I was also selected as the only teacher from my campus to attend the Superintendent's Retreat at Kalahari Resort for professional development through the YES, Inc. program.
My elementary PE experience led me to my middle school and high school experience in Spring Branch ISD at Westchester Academy of International Studies. I was able to teach 6th grade and all high school PE courses for 3 years. WAIS gave me the opportunity to learn more about increasing rigor throughout all subjects. WAIS is an IB school, so I had to learn how to adapt to those standards and expectations. Since our school was a specialized campus, our students had the opportunity to play sports at their home school. Therefore, I took my classes a step further by preparing students to join sports teams of their choice and keeping them connected with upcoming tryouts. Many of my students ended up playing for their home school or stayed to play in our co-ed volleyball club that I started at school. While teaching PE, I volunteered to teach a course called Professional and Personal Skills to juniors and seniors. This course is similar to AVID because it gives students the opportunity to learn how to write resumes, formal essays, research skills, college selections based on career choices, and interview skills. This course helped them be well-rounded students with their community service project that they professionally built from the ground up. It brought so much joy to see them fully content in their final product, which probably sparked their interest in a new career path. This class alone, reminded me that this is exactly what I want to teach full-time. Thanks to this experience, I'm proud to be your 2024 AVID Teacher and Coordinator at Willowridge HS.
