Ms. Rachel Cortez
Welcome, Bulldogs! I am very excited and proud to be the campus principal of Stephen F. Austin High School. After joining Fort Bend ISD in 2001, I was hired as a Special Education Teacher and quickly moved into the Department Head role for the next six years here at Austin. After leaving Austin in 2007, I joined Hightower HS for two years as an Assistant Principal, then Hodges Bend MS for three years as an Assistant Principal and Dean of Instruction. I then moved to Kempner HS, where I served as the Associate Principal for six years. I then returned to Hodges Bend MS as the Building Principal for another three years.
In April 2021, I was named as the fourth Building Principal of Austin High School, returning to the campus where I started my Fort Bend ISD career. I follow some extraordinary leaders and plan to continue the many rich traditions embedded in the Austin community. I’m eternally grateful to return to the Dawg House and lead a campus known for its exceptional academics, athletics, and fine arts programs. Along with being a former employee, I have other familial connections to Austin. My oldest son Anthony is a 2006 AHS graduate, as is my youngest son, Max, who graduated in 2017.
I have over 25 years of experience in education and plan to continue for many more. I look forward to working with students, staff, parents and the community to add to the legacy of Austin HS as the premier school in the district. Together, we will… “Be the Difference.”
