Ms. K. Smith
Welcome!
I have been a high school educator for 22 years, with 12 of those years being at Austin High School. I teach Professional Communications under the Career, Technology, & Engineering Department (CTE). I have also taught Yearbook Journalism (MHS), Debate (AHS & MHS), and Intro to Broadcasting (KAHS News). I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Communications with a minor in Sociology.
The Professional Communications curriculum includes (but is not limited to) hands-on skills such as professional and social communication abilities, language skills, interview skills, career exploration, teamwork, and leadership (all of which are soft skills in demand, in all career fields).
I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and experience in these essential skills and look forward to facilitating the needs of our students as they transition into the workplace and the world!
"Communication is the solvent of all problems and is the foundation for personal development"
-Peter Shepherd
“Although this course is an elective, it is one of the few classes that every single student will need and use regardless of their path in life!”

CAN WE AGREE TO STOP CALLING THEM “SOFT SKILLS”?
My argument is that defining this skill-set as “soft” actually devalues an essential part of every procurement professional’s toolkit.
