BAND PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Lake Olympia Middle School Band program contains four different performance levels;
· Beginner Band: The Beginner Band is for students with little or no prior background in playing a band instrument. Students will learn how to produce a characteristic sound on their instrument, be able to read music, and understand basic musical terms and skills. Members of Beginner Band will perform in at least two concerts during the year.
Concert Band: The Concert Band is a non-contest group designed for students who have played their instrument for more than a year. The focus of the class is to strengthen and remediate fundamentals and to encourage strong practice and rehearsal skills. Members of Concert Band will play in at least two concerts during the year.
Symphonic Band: The Symphonic Band is for students that can already read music, create a characteristic tone, have a strong foundation of technique on their instrument, and are knowledgeable enough to prepare music outside of the classroom. Symphonic Band members perform 6+ times in a school year and compete in band competitions such as Region Band, Solo & Ensemble, FBISD Band Contest, and UIL Concert & Sight Reading.
Honors Band: The Honors Band is the top-performing ensemble and is a great fit for the highest-level performing students in the program. These students exhibit strong music-reading/sight-reading skills, quality tone production, technical facility on their instrument, and eagerness to perform difficult music. Students in this group show a robust interest in playing and performing at a high level. Honor Band students perform 6+ times in a school year and compete in band competitions such as Region Band, Solo & Ensemble, FIBSD Band Contest, and UIL Concert & Sight Reading.
