Ms. Tonya Milburn

Hello! My name is Tonya Milburn, and I'm thrilled to say that this is my 20th year teaching Math.  I grew up in Galveston, Tx and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Texas Southern University in 1999 and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from University of Houston-Clear Lake in 2009.  I began my teaching career in Galveston ISD.  The majority of my experience has been in the middle school arena. I’ve taught first grade through college level. I currently live in the Houston area. I have 5 boys (Brock, Nicolas, Dreux, Trey, and Casey). I enjoy exercising, cooking, reading, watching movies, and spending time with my family. I am excited about our future Math journey as we learn and grow together. I look forward to meeting you!

    INTRODUCTION:

Welcome to 7th grade Math!  This will be an exciting and challenging year for your child as he/she develops new skills and responsibilities.  There are many new skills to be tackled this year as well as expanding on prior concepts.  You will want to be involved in your child’s opportunities by encouraging him/her to do the best possible work in school this year and to take advantage of available resources to help him/her reach their highest potential.

    ATTENDANCE & TUTORING

Because of consistently building of concepts in math, it is very important that each child attend school daily.  It may be helpful if he/she misses several days of school to attend tutorials scheduled as below.

After school tutoring will be held on Thursday at 4:25-5:40.  Please have your student attend as often as needed.  Throughout the six weeks, I will also request students to attend tutorials for those who are missing several assignments.  Please make arrangements for your child to be picked up after tutorials.

    TEACHER INFORMATION

I consider it very important that we communicate about your child’s work and conduct.  Please feel free to call, email, or write a note if needed, and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible.  If you need to schedule a conference with me or any of your child’s teachers, please contact me.  If you cannot reach me, leave a message with the office and I will contact you as soon as possible.  Please feel free to contact me with your concerns.

It is a privilege to be able to help in the important responsibility of educating your child.  I look forward to working with you and your child to make this a great school year. Thank you in advance for your time and support.

    HOMEWORK / QUIZ PROCEDURES:

Students must complete homework each night.  Homework will be assigned Monday - Thursday each week to provide an opportunity for your child to practice the skills that we have been learning. Also please make sure that your child has a quiet and comfortable place to do homework and check to see that the homework is completed. If a long term project is assigned, a letter will be sent home with detailed information, including the due date for the assignment. Weekly quizzes will be given on Fridays unless there is an unexpected event.

    LATE or MISSING ASSIGNMENTS:

Students are expected to complete their homework on time. All homework is due the next day unless the teacher states otherwise. If work is late, ten points will be deducted per day. If your child has missed an assignment due to illness, your child will have full day for every day he/she was absent to make up the assignment(s). Please make sure your child returns to school with a note signed by the parent/guardian.

    CELL PHONES:

They are NOT allowed in class. If a student has his/her cell phone out in class without permission, the cell phone will be collected. The phone will be sent to the office and the parent will have to pay $15. Please see the principal for more details.
