Summer Reading Information
James Bowie Middle School
James Bowie Middle School will follow the FBISD guidelines for summer reading.
During the summer, we encourage parents and families to commit to 30 minutes a day of reading texts of their choice while school is not in session. Research suggests that this simple commitment provides growth in vocabulary, fluency, background knowledge, and overall comprehension.
Please visit the district page for more information and helpful links for supporting literacy at home.

Subject: Summer Reading Information for Incoming English I Students at Travis High School
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. As we look ahead to the upcoming school year, we want to inform you about the summer reading expectations for incoming English I and English I AAC students at Travis High School.
Reading over the summer helps students maintain and strengthen their comprehension skills, exposes them to a variety of genres, and supports the development of stronger writing. We encourage students to read texts that challenge them, both in content and complexity, in preparation for high school coursework.
Here is a breakdown of the summer reading guidelines:
English I (On-Level):
Students are expected to read one grade-appropriate novel of their choice. The following titles are suggestions:
- Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
- Catalyst by Laurie Halse Anderson
- Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds
Students are welcome to choose a different book that is age-appropriate and aligns with their interests, but we recommend selecting a novel that offers depth and literary value.
English I AAC (Advanced):
Students are expected to read the following:
- Chapters 1 and 2 of How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster
AND
- One of the following novels (student's choice):
- Animal Farm by George Orwell
- Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys
These texts will be discussed at the beginning of the school year and may be the basis for classwork and assignments.
We appreciate your support in encouraging your student to engage with meaningful texts over the summer. If you have any questions or need additional recommendations, please don't hesitate to reach out.
