• Community  Service  Opportunities

Wondering what volunteering or joining a club has to do with college applications & scholarships?

Many scholarships are based on long-term school and community involvement. Your volunteer and community efforts show who you are and what you value. Also, colleges like dedication to specific organizations, and they like to see leadership within that spirit of volunteerism.

Community Service is described as anything that benefits the local community. Students can join in with a local organization or find a need in the community and seek to provide for that need.

Starting your own community service project/organization:

Volunteer Houston Youth in Action Council:

The Volunteer Houston Youth in Action Council is a group of Houston area high school students working to find ways to enhance community service by youth. Council members meet regularly and advise Volunteer Houston on ideas for involvement.  Those interested in participating in the project can contact Mabel Menefee at mabelm@volunteerhouston.org.
    Youth in Philanthropy:

The YIP program allows juniors and seniors from local high schools to experience volunteer opportunities with some of our community’s most responsive nonprofit organizations. At the conclusion of the eight-month program, students face a tough decision – they must assess the nonprofit organizations and award Foundation grant dollars based on their experience and observed community impact. In return for the students’ service to our community, some outstanding YIP participants are awarded higher education scholarships at a celebratory luncheon.

Juniors and seniors from high schools located in Fort Bend County are eligible to apply and must commit to attend six (6) Saturday sessions from September through March.
