All students with prior experience who select orchestra as their elective are automatically accepted into the program. The Elkins High School Orchestra program is divided into four levels: Sinfonia, Philharmonic, Cadenza, and Chamber.
Chamber is the Varsity level ensemble and Is for experienced ensemble members. Very rarely will freshmen be accepted into Chamber. Members of Chamber are expected to be taking private lesson, audition for Region orchestra and participate In UIL Solo and Ensemble.
Cadenza is the Non-Varsity ensemble. Cadenza members are required to learn the Region audition material in preparation for auditions and to participate in UIL Solo and Ensemble. Members of Chamber and invited members of Cadenza will participate in the Full Orchestra at Elkins High School as well.
Philharmonic is the Sub Non-Varsity Ensemble. Members of Philharmonic can audition for Region orchestra and are strongly encouraged to participate in UIL Solo and Ensemble.
Sinfonia is the second Sub Non-Varsity ensemble. Members of Sinfonia Orchestra are encouraged to participate in UIL Solo and Ensemble. All orchestras will participate in UIL Contest and Sight-Reading.
Having different levels means that everyone, regardless of ability, has a place to perform with the orchestra. The size of each ensemble Is determined by the available instrumentation based on the audition process. All groups are open to every grade level.
