Welcome to Mrs. Halimi’s ESOL class!
I was not born in the Unites States and English is not my first language. The analogy I could use to describe experiences of adjusting in a new culture and life would be “playing a game without knowing the rules.”
Every time a new student appears at the door of my classroom, I recall my personal experiences during my first weeks and months in the US. My own experience of being an ESL learner, moving from another country, and learning to adjust in the new culture, puts me in a very advantageous position; my own experiences help me relate to my students’ needs and challenges. I personally believe when a teacher is able to fully understand where the students come from and the challenges they face along the way, he/she will be more competent to assist them in both their educational and lifetime goals.
I believe that when we honor the different cultures from which our students originate, we are also honoring who they are and where they want to go in life.
This is my second year at SLMS. I taught at CHS for 13 years prior to joining SLMS.
