The CME Mathletes club is an after-school competitive math program organized by a group of parent volunteers. This year the club will be open to 3rd-5th graders. One of the main goals of the club is to introduce the students to participation in contest level mathematics. Here are some highlights and details of this year’s club offerings:
1. We will have weekly online courses in a variety of topics (algebra, geometry, basic number theory, probability, problem solving, and miscellaneous topics). These will be taught on Friday afternoons, starting in mid-September, by our fantastic volunteers from the math club at the Dulles Math and Science Academy. The topics will range in difficulty from foundational to more advanced, and multiple topics will be offered concurrently each week. Assuming that all participants in the club are motivated to learn and are reasonably proficient in their school level mathematics, there should be something for participants of every level, from beginner to advanced.
2. We will participate in monthly Mathleague competitions. These contests are mostly online, and all Mathletes club members are encouraged to participate in at least one of them throughout the year (some people participate in all of them). Last year our CME team did very well; we placed 3rd in State and then 7th in the national tournament.
3. We will also have monthly team challenges, which are designed to be completed in small groups, according to your own schedule, each month. These are team-building exercises, and there will be prizes for consistent participation, and for the winners!
