• 7th Grade Mathematics — Course Overview

In 7th Grade Mathematics, students build on prior knowledge to deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts and apply these skills to real-world problems. This course follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards and prepares students for success in future math courses and on state assessments.

    Mathematical Process Standards

    Students will:

    • Use problem-solving strategies and mathematical reasoning.

    • Apply mathematics to real-life situations.

    • Communicate mathematical ideas using multiple representations (symbols, graphs, diagrams).

    • Select and use appropriate tools (manipulatives, technology, estimation) to solve problems.

    Major Content Areas

Students will explore the following key domains:

    1. Rational Numbers & Operations

    • Represent and compare rational numbers (fractions, decimals, integers).

    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers with fluency.

    2. Proportionality & Ratios

    • Analyze proportional relationships using tables, graphs, equations, and verbal descriptions.

    • Apply proportions in real-world contexts.

    3. Expressions, Equations & Relationships

    • Write and evaluate algebraic expressions.

    • Solve one-variable equations and inequalities.

    • Represent linear relationships in multiple forms.

    4. Geometry & Measurement

    • Solve problems involving geometric figures, volume, and measurements.

    • Explore proportionality in geometric contexts.

    5. Data Analysis & Personal Financial Literacy

    • Interpret and analyze data using dot plots, box plots, and measures of center.

    • Apply mathematics to financial contexts, including taxes, simple interest, and budgeting.

    6. Probability

    • Investigate probability concepts and use them to make predictions and solve problems.

    Course Goals

By the end of this year, students will:

    • Strengthen number sense and problem-solving skills.

    • Develop fluency with mathematics as a language and tool.

    • Apply math concepts to everyday life, analytical thinking, and future math courses.

    • Demonstrate mastery of state standards in preparation for STAAR assessments.

  • 📊 Grading Scale & Recording

    • FBISD uses a numerical grading system (0–100 scale) for reporting student performance on report cards and transcripts. Fort Bend ISD

    📐 Grade Categories & Weighting

For most grade levels (including middle and high school):

    • Major Grades: 50% of the grading period average

    • Daily Grades (homework, classwork, quizzes, etc.): 50% of the grading period average
(This shows equal emphasis on major assessments and ongoing practice.) Fort Bend ISD

    📌 Standards-Based Grading Elements

    • Certain campuses, particularly in lower elementary (PreK–1st) and some intermediate levels, may use Standards-Based Grading, where student progress is reported based on proficiency levels (e.g., Proficient, Progressing, Developing) tied directly to TEKS standards, rather than just percentages. 📅 Required Number of Grades

    For secondary courses:

    • Teachers should record a minimum number of grades per grading period, typically including:

      • At least 3 major grades

      • At least 6 daily grades
This ensures a balanced representation of student performance. Fort Bend ISD

    📓 Additional Notes

    • District procedures specify that grades must reflect mastery of Fort Bend ISD curriculum goals aligned to Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Fort Bend ISD

    • Policies also outline handling of transfer grades, late work, and academic honesty, though specifics may be determined by individual campuses or teachers while remaining within district guidelines. Fort Bend ISD

  • FBISD Absence & Makeup Work Policy

    📌 Reporting Absences

    • Parents should provide an absence excuse note or email to the campus attendance clerk within 5 school days of the student’s return to school. If documentation isn’t provided within that timeframe, the absence may be coded unexcused. Fort Bend ISD

    • Excuse notes should include the student’s name, dates absent, reason for absence, and parent contact information. Email is acceptable and often preferred. Fort Bend ISD

    📅 Excused Absences

FBISD recognizes a variety of reasons for excused absences when properly documented, including:

    • Illness or medical appointments

    • Required court appearances

    • Religious holy days

    • Certain school-related or educational activities

    • Other reasons allowed under Texas law, such as college visits for juniors and seniors (with documentation) Fort Bend ISD

    📝 Makeup Work Opportunities

    • Students are expected to make up any schoolwork, assignments, assessments, or missed learning due to an absence, whether excused or unexcused, once they return to school. Fort Bend ISD

    • The number of days allowed to complete makeup work is typically equal to the number of days absent—for example, if a student misses 3 days, they generally have 3 school days after returning to complete the work. Fort Bend ISD

    • Teachers are not required to provide assignments ahead of time for planned absences, though it is encouraged that students coordinate with teachers when possible and appropriate. Fort Bend ISD

    📍 Important Notes

    • It is the student’s responsibility to check with each teacher to find out what work was missed and when it is due. RTMS PTO

    • Some campuses or teachers may have specific late work policies or classroom procedures for makeup and late assignment submission. Those will be communicated by the teacher. Fort Bend ISD

    • Excessive absences—whether excused or unexcused—can affect attendance requirements for course credit or final grades and may involve attendance committees or support teams. Scribd
