My name is Derrick Black and I am the general music specialist here at Drabek Elementary. I grew up in Richmond, California before moving to Sugar Land, Texas in February of 2000. I graduated from Holy Names University with my Bachelor of Art degree in Psychology. In 2014, I also obtained my Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Houston Baptist University. In 2021, I completed my Principal Certification coursework at Lamar University. 

     I am a vocalist, pianist, and song writer who enjoys spending time with family, drawing, playing basketball (when I find the time), and creating music in my music studio. I am married to my beautiful wife, Bisa Ayana, of 20 years and have two daughters.

     I am very passionate about music and love “igniting” the passion for this universal language in others. My goal is to share the joy of music with all of my students and provide them with a foundation for lifelong music appreciation!
