Proper Attire for PE
Shoes:
Why Proper Footwear Matters:
- Injury Prevention: Well-fitting athletic shoes provide essential support and cushioning, reducing the risk of sprains, strains, and other injuries.
- Stability: Shoes with good traction help students maintain balance during various physical activities.
- Comfort: Comfortable shoes enhance the overall PE experience and encourage active participation.
- Hygiene: Clean, dedicated PE shoes prevent dirt and debris from being tracked into classrooms.
Guidelines for PE Footwear:
- Closed-Toe Design: Students should wear closed-toe athletic shoes (sneakers or trainers) that fully cover their feet.
- Proper Fit: Shoes should fit well, with enough room for toes to move comfortably but not too loose to cause slipping.
- Non-Marking Soles: To protect gym floors, please ensure that the shoes have non-marking soles, i.e. boots and shoes with black soles.
- Laces or Straps: Shoes with laces or secure straps provide better support than slip-on style
Clothing:
-
Safety and Comfort: When we wear clothing that is inappropriate for physical activity, we risk having our movement restricted or encountering slips, trips, or falls due to clothing.
-
Modesty: Shorts under skirts or dresses provide extra coverage, ensuring that students feel comfortable and confident while wearing a dress. They prevent accidental exposure, especially during activities like sitting, bending, or dancing.
- Label Jackets and Coats: Labeling your students' jackets and coats will ensure their return if they are left in the gym or outside during PE.
Student participation:
All students are expected to participate in PE two times a week. Please provide a doctor's note if your child is not able to participate in PE.
PE Programs/Events:
Jump Rope for Heart
Jump Rope for Heart is a community service learning program of the American Heart Association. It teaches students the important balance of developing heart healthy habits, and that raising funds to support cardiovascular research and education is part of community service.
Our Jump Rope for Heart event will be held in February.
Fitnessgram State Mandated Test
FitnessGram is the national fitness assessment and reporting program for youth. It includes a variety of health-related physical fitness tests designed to assess cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition.
In Fort Bend ISD, elementary students in grade 3rd-5th take a series of five tests: Curl-up, trunk, flexed arm hang, shoulder stretch, and pacer test. Read the corresponding link for more details of each of the tests that are given.
The 3rd-2nd grade students at Burton will begin pre- FitnessGram testing in September and the final tests will be done in February.
