Kimberly Charles, Principal

  • It is my pleasure and privilege to introduce myself as the principal of Burton Elementary. Serving as principal is a huge honor, and I am humbled to have the opportunity to work alongside the staff to support the Burton Community.

Over the past twenty-eight years, I have been extremely dedicated to making an impact in the lives of children. I am a graduate of the University of Louisiana, where I earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in Education. I began my career as a teacher in Louisiana. I taught in Louisiana for 10 years before relocating to Texas. I have taught in Klein ISD in Spring, Texas and North East ISD in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to becoming an assistant principal in Fort Bend ISD, I served as an assistant principal in North East ISD in San Antonio, Texas. I joined Fort Bend ISD in 2019 as the assistant principal of Glover Elementary. In 2020, I became the principal of Barbara Jordan Elementary and now I proudly serve as the Principal of Burton Elementary.

My husband and I have three children who are all products of Fort Bend ISD. Our oldest son is a graduate of Ridge Point High School and is currently a senior at Texas State University.  Our daughter is also a graduate of Ridge Point High School and is currently a sophomore at the University of Louisiana. Our youngest son currently attends Ridge Point High School.

I will work hard to continue the success established at Burton by building strong relationships with parents, students and community partners. With this said, I am committed to building a culture and climate that values family and community partnerships.  I will work collaboratively with everyone to ensure that we support the students' work at school and that it aligns to the Profile of a Graduate.  I am committed to ensure that all students, parents, teachers and staff members feel excited and welcomed to enter Burton Elementary. Together we will meet the challenges and celebrate the successes in a positive and safe learning environment.

I look forward to getting to know you. My doors will be open and I welcome active participation and input. Together we will continue building Burton Elementary with a shared vision and high expectations for all students.

Michelle Colter, Assistant Principal

  • I am truly honored to serve as the Assistant Principal at Walter Moses Burton Elementary. Education has been my calling for as long as I can remember, and this year I begin my 14th year in this incredible profession. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching in the classroom for 7 years, serving as a Data-Driven Instruction Specialist for 2 years, and now leading as an assistant principal for the past 5 years. Each of these roles has shaped who I am today and deepened my passion for helping students and teachers reach their fullest potential.

I hold a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies and a master's degree in educational leadership. I’ve always had a special love for mathematics instruction and the power of data to drive meaningful change. At Burton, I lead initiatives around Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), discipline, and safety and security. One of the things I am most proud of is helping to build a culture where data doesn’t just live on a spreadsheet—it tells the story of our students and guides us in making the best decisions for their growth and success.

My philosophy is simple: I believe every child can learn and thrive when given high expectations, meaningful support, and a safe, nurturing environment. Relationships are at the heart of everything I do—whether it’s with students, families, or staff. I strive to lead with integrity, empathy, and a relentless focus on student success.

I was born and raised in Austin, Texas, and moved to Houston at 18 to attend college. What I thought would be just four years turned into making Houston my permanent home—I fell in love with the community, the people, and the opportunities to grow as an educator.

When I’m not at school, I enjoy spending time with my family. I am blessed with a wonderful husband and two amazing children, including a newborn who has already reminded me of the importance of patience, love, and laughter. I also enjoy exploring real estate, cooking and baking for my loved ones, and challenging myself with board games and puzzles.

Being part of the Burton Elementary family is one of the greatest joys of my career. I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to working alongside our students, families, and staff to make this school year our best one yet.
