Mrs. Kayo Mitra

My name is Kayo Mitra, and I am the EL Specialist at Colony Bend Elementary and Colony Meadows Elementary. I have been teaching since 1995. I am originally from Japan, but I have been living in this country for over 30 years. Learning a new language is my passion! Other than English, I can speak Japanese and Spanish fluently, and I am currently learning Mandarin, Portuguese, Korean, and French. My family includes a wonderful husband and two sons. We are a multicultural family, and we are all multilingual. As a family, we love to travel to many different places.

I love my job as an EL Specialist. I support and coach classroom teachers so that they can provide the best learning opportunities for our ESL students. It is a challenge to learn a new language, especially if you are new to the country. At our school, we strive to create a safe learning environment where students can feel safe and welcome. Each student brings a gift of talents, and it is our job to help them show their talents while learning a new language.   • ESL (English as a Second Language) is provided to Emergent Bilingual students as an intensive program of instruction to accelerate the acquisition of proficiency in English language and literacy. ESL instruction is based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) and is accommodated based on the student's level of proficiency in English as well as level of academic achievement. The goal of ESL program is to develop English language skills in four domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing) through academic instruction. ESL services are provided through content-based classroom instruction.
