Green and Growing
Improving muscular strength and fitness is just as important as boosting brain power, just ask athletes at Dulles High School. The students are enjoying new weight room equipment, such as double racks with storage, benches and barbells that replace worn and unsafe items. Students in Health/P.E. classes, athletic periods and all sports programs can access the equipment for their workout needs.Marshall High School
Sharing Mariachi with the World
Here’s a two-for-one learning opportunity at Marshall High School. Through the “Sharing Mariachi with the World” grant, members of the Mariachi Band are learning to play musical instruments, as well as set up audio equipment. Their performances are enhanced as they learn to successfully operate cube monitor amps, super cardioid condensers, PA speakers and more!Reese Career and Technical Center
Geeking Out with Computer Building Kits
Accessing information from a computer is one thing, but being able to build a computer is another. For Computer Maintenance & Networking students at the Reese Career and Technical Center, the latter is being realized. The students use various parts (motherboards, CPUs, graphics cards, memory modules and network adapters) to build fully functional computers and install operating systems. The process helps students gain confidence in detecting and solving computer problems, while gaining career skills.Ridge Point High School
Improving Safety and Learning through Upgraded Equipment in Technical Theatre
Playing it safe as they prepare for stage performances is the focus for Theatre students at Ridge Point High School. The students use personal safety equipment (such as ear and eye protection), machinery (band saw, drills and chargers) and hardware (measuring tools, hand tools and storage solutions) to prepare for upcoming stage performances. With this grant, students are improving technical theatre skills and demonstrating safety practices.Travis High School
Disrupting Traditional Texts
Reading graphic novels can be entertaining and informative, especially for social studies students at Travis High School.
The students are “Disrupting Traditional Texts” and choosing graphic novels to learn about historical figures and time period. Each week, the students read a novel, prepare a summary and join in group discussions to share what they’ve learned. The grant has not only helped spark students’ interest in history, but has helped them develop a love of reading.
