FBISD Listening and Literacy Tours give parents an opportunity to connect with Board of Trustees - October 2017

Following a successful first stop in the FBISD Board of Trustees’ Listening Tour, the School Board is looking forward to welcoming parents and community members to its November 6 Literacy Tour, which takes place at Barrington Place Elementary.

The Board kicked off its first Listening Tour at Quail Valley Middle School on October 16 with more than 50 participants attending. The event gave participants an opportunity to meet with Board members, take part in roundtable discussions, learn about recent Board decisions to support student achievement, and enjoy student artwork and musical performances.

“We started the Listening Tours last year because we wanted to get out of the board room and come into the community to meet with families and community members in the schools,” said FBISD Board President Kristin Tassin. “We wanted to give the community an opportunity to get to know us, sit with us at roundtables, ask questions and create dialogue with us and members of our executive team.”

During the roundtable discussions, participants were able to express their concerns and ask Board Members questions on various topics relating to Special Education and Gifted/Talented, attendance boundaries and technology and curriculum.

“The Listening Tour is an ideal method of getting information out to parents,” said Quail Valley GT Academy parent, Trina Pagura. “I think the school setting, which is more of a relaxed atmosphere, helps parents feel more comfortable in speaking with Board members.”

Saran Winters, the parent of Garcia Middle School and Travis High School students, shared in Pagura’s sentiment.

“The Listening Tour is an awesome thing,” said Winters. “It removes the barriers between parents and the School Board and gives us a chance to interact face-to-face with them, state our concerns and have them addressed in a casual, stress-free environment. I really love this event!”

Parents may attend any of the upcoming Literacy and Listening Tours to engage with the Board members and, if they like, attend the Board Workshop to learn about decisions that affect student learning.
