Fort Bend ISD Board Member Promotes Literacy and Volunteerism on Her Birthday

Inspired by the children’s book Eloise in Paris, the celebration— named “Addie’s Book Day”—transformed parts of the campus into scenes from Paris, France. Heyliger and her guests even donned French berets.

This year marked the fourth Addie’s Book Day, a tradition she began during her second term as a board member.

“We created Addie’s Book Day to promote literacy and volunteerism in our community,” Heyliger said. “When communities come together to support a cause, we are greater because of it.”

FBISD Superintendent Marc Smith, members of the district’s executive team and other community members volunteered to read to students throughout the celebration.

In the weeks leading up to the event, Bhuchar Elementary collected hundreds of books from community members to help build home libraries for students in need.

“It’s important that we continue to promote literacy—whether it’s on Addie’s Book Day or at home with our kids on any day of the year,” Heyliger added.

The event was made possible through generous support from Phoenix Design Group, Bhuchar Elementary PTA, and other community partners who provided decorations, refreshments and volunteer assistance.
