Kempner High School Student Earns Silver Medal at National Competition
Fort Bend ISD (August 20, 2025) – Kempner High School student Sharon Agbebaku received a silver medal at the 2025 National Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Competition in Poetry Performance, held in Charlotte, North Carolina. Along with the medal, she received a $1,500 scholarship and an iPad.
ACT-SO, launched by the NAACP in 1978, is often referred to as the “Olympics of the Mind.” The program highlights the academic and artistic achievements of students of African descent, with competitions in more than 30 categories across STEM, humanities, business, and performing and visual arts.
The NAACP Missouri City & Vicinity Branch oversees the local program that serves students in Fort Bend County and surrounding communities. This year, eight students participated in the local competition, including four representing Fort Bend ISD:
- Nita Adebo – Oratory, Clements High School
- Sharon Agbebaku* – Oratory, Poetry Performance, Original Essay, Kempner High School
- Omari Banks – Entrepreneurship, Travis High School
- Carter Jones – Painting, Travis High School
