On the road to impact: FBISD recognizes bus driver training graduates
Fort Bend ISD (May 22, 2025) – While the nation faces a shortage of school bus drivers, Fort Bend ISD is addressing the need by graduating future drivers through its Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Driver Trainee Program—an initiative that pays trainees while they prepare for their roles.
FBISD Transportation Supervisor Isaac Malbrough presented 36 graduates with certificates and shared a message of encouragement during a special ceremony.
“I’m charging you with leading the PAC,” he said. “Always act with professionalism, hold yourself accountable and be a great communicator—not just talking but listening to students and their needs.”
Executive Director of Transportation Mike Jones congratulated the graduates on their hard work and shared his story, beginning as a bus driver.
“We know what you’ve been through, and we appreciate everything you’ve done to get here,” Jones said. “I’m just glad to have you. Hang in there.”
Chief Operations Officer Dr. Damian Viltz emphasized the impact drivers have each day.
“We transport about 40,000 students every day,” Dr. Viltz said. “You are the first Fort Bend ISD employee they see. Your interaction with them can set the tone for the rest of their day. That's an awesome responsibility. Thank you for accepting the challenge.”
The paid Driver Trainee Program was created to help address the district’s bus driver shortage following the COVID-19 pandemic. The program trains eligible candidates to earn their CDL and transition into full-time bus driver roles. Trainees receive classroom instruction, meet federally mandated Entry Level Driving Training (ELDT) requirements, and undergo behind-the-wheel training with district transportation trainers.
