FBISD launches successful esports program at five high schools, students advance to state championship in inaugural season

CHS esports team membersFort Bend ISD (May 12, 2025) – Fort Bend ISD launched an esports program at five high schools, including Austin, Clements, Elkins, Ridge Point and Travis, and successfully sent students to a state championship in its inaugural season.

“It started as just an idea this fall,” Ridge Point High School esports Coach Myron McReynolds said. “We saw esports as an opportunity for a group of underserved kids to compete for their school and become part of a team.”

Esports—short for electronic sports—is competitive video gaming where players compete individually or on teams.

Players represent their school just like students who participate in traditional sports and fine arts competitions.

During this first season (spring 2025), the district’s teams had never played together before and oftentimes faced off against more experienced teams from established esports programs.

Despite that, teams from Austin, Clements and Ridge Point high schools competed well enough to qualify for the Texas Scholastic Esports Federation 2025 Undisputed State Championships (TexSEF) at Baylor University earlier this month.

“This is a great accomplishment for a brand-new program just getting started,” McReynolds said. “Once we get some experience and our labs are fully up and running, we are expecting big things in the future for Fort Bend ISD esports.”

The district provided each participating campus with an esports lab that contains 11 high-end gaming PCs and 4 Switch console stations. The labs were installed this spring and will be fully operational for the 2025 fall semester.
