Austin High School Naval JROTC cadet selected to attend elite flight academy

Fort Bend ISD (May 31, 2024) – Austin High School Naval Junior ROTC cadet Andy Chang has been selected to attend the 2024 Commander of Naval Air Forces Flight Academy at Delaware State University this summer.

The United States Navy funds scholarships worth more than $26,000 for each student to attend its academy.

Chang participated in an extensive selection process and was one of only 28 students selected from more than 400 applicants nationwide. Students were evaluated based on their grades, leadership roles in school, community service and a 400-word essay. They also had to perform well on the Aviation Qualifying Test (AQT) and other exams that measured their knowledge in all aspects of aviation.

At the end of the intensive eight-week program, he will earn college credit and have an opportunity to obtain his private pilot license. Chang is the third student from Fort Bend ISD and the second Austin High School cadet in consecutive years to be chosen to attend an elite flight academy.
