Fort Bend ISD remembers 9/11 two decades later (9/10/2021)

FORT BEND ISD (Sept. 10, 2021) – This year marks the 20th anniversary of 9/11, and Fort Bend ISD joins the nation in observing Patriot Day with ceremonies and programs honoring the victims and heroes.

During a special news segment this week, ABC13 asked individuals across the District to recount what they remembered about the day 20 years ago. Karen Smith and Ashley Joseph, both teachers at Travis High School and Ashley Poole, a student there, shared their memories of the day.

Corey Stewart, principal at Dulles High School, remembers feeling compelled to “do his part” by stepping away from his teaching career and joining the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve to serve and protect his country. You can watch his 10-minute special here.

Fort Bend ISD also lost a graduate on that fateful day, Daniel Caballero, Austin High School Class of 1998. On Sept. 10, the school held a memorial in his honor. Electrician Technician 3rd Class Petty Officer Caballero was in the  U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Pentagon as an Electronics Technician.

The memorial service at Austin High School included performances by the school’s  band, orchestra and choir. At the conclusion of the ceremony, students from the NJROTC Battalion I placed a wreath and flag at the memorial site located at the school.
