FBISD launches the Whole Child Health Initiative to increase awareness of resources and decrease the stigma around mental health (4/30/2021)
FORT BEND ISD (April 30, 2021) – Fort Bend ISD (FBISD) is launching the Whole Child Health Initiative to increase awareness of health resources and decrease the stigma surrounding mental health.
The District is guided by a set of core beliefs and commitments that each child’s success is best achieved in a supportive climate and safe environment. One of the manners in which the District fulfills this commitment is through nurturing the whole child.
Through the Whole Child Health Initiative, the FBISD Division of Social Emotional Learning and Comprehensive Health supports and develops the mental, behavioral, social, emotional, and physical health of all students in the District. This initiative will create awareness of the District’s robust health services and resources to support students, parents, and staff and to decrease the stigma around mental health. Whole Child Health views mental health as important as physical health and wants all stakeholders to feel comfortable and safe in seeking needed supports.
FBISD Professional School Counselors are at the center of the Whole Child Health initiative. They provide prevention and intervention services to all students and help connect families to additional resources and supports when needed. These supports include 18 licensed district Social Workers (SWs), six Mental Health Counselors also known as Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs), and three Safe and Drug Free Specialists to provide counseling, resources, and mental health services in English and Spanish based on the unique needs of each student.
FBISD also partners with other licensed mental health providers to meet the needs of all FBISD students. Clearhope Counseling & Wellness Center provides high-quality mental health services with a client-centered, collaborative approach. The Clearhope team is staffed by fully licensed LPCs, licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs). They accept all major insurances including Medicaid and Medicare (normal co-pays apply). Tele-therapy virtual options are also provided by Clearhope Counseling.
Invo Healthcare IMPACT provides a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of students at eight FBISD schools. These mental health professionals use interventions to provide students struggling with social emotional issues at home and school with trauma-informed care. IMPACT therapists work closely with teachers, school staff and administrators to provide effective care for students.
Clearhope Counseling and Invo Healthcare provide care to students who qualify under the Victims of Crime Act of 1984 (VOCA). All District students, parents, and staff who have been victims of crimes, including victims of domestic violence, witnesses to a crime, those impacted by crime, and victims of bullying, can receive counseling and therapeutic services from Invo Healthcare’s licensed clinicians at no charge. Clearhope also serves individuals who have not been victims of crime using Medicaid or private insurance (co-pays may apply).
FBISD’s Talkline is the District’s confidential helpline to share mental health concerns such as depression or suicidal thoughts. This service includes both talking and texting features. Students, parents, and staff can text the word SPEAK to 741741 or call (281)240-8255 (TALK) to connect with a crisis counselor. Both services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The FBISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group established by the Board of Trustees to aid the district in meeting its strategic objectives to provide healthy school environments for students, staff and community members. Through SHAC, parents, community members, and District employees work together to improve the health of all students and families through coordinated school health programs and events that promote a healthy lifestyle. SHAC uses the Whole School, Whole Child, Whole Community (WSCC) model along with District Goals and the Fort Bend ISD Profile of a Graduate to support the District’s community with evidence-based wellness resources that encourage and foster lifelong wellness of staff, students and the community.
Fort Bend ISD is dedicated to ensuring each student is healthy, safe and supported.
