Saturday, February 20 Update: Full District Closure Extended through Monday, February 22 (2/20/21)

To our FBISD Community,

I am writing you today to provide an update regarding the District’s plans for next week. Thanks to the efforts of our hard-working Operations and Human Resources teams, we were able to arrive at some important decisions today, with more to come on Monday.

Based on our preliminary assessment, we have determined that a full District closure will be extended through Monday, February 22, 2021. There will be some staff who are asked to work on Monday, and the posted Board Meetings will take place virtually, as scheduled.

As of today, we are also certain that Hightower High School and Glover Elementary will not be able to return to face-to-face learning during the next week. Both schools have sustained significant damage, therefore, when learning resumes, both schools will be 100% virtual during the week of February 22.

As mentioned yesterday, a full assessment of our facilities is still underway to determine the extent of any impact of the winter storm. With freezing temperatures finally behind, we will have crews working throughout the weekend to complete these assessments and required repairs, as well as any related clean up. I am pleased to share that they are making significant progress, but it is possible we may still identify more schools that need to learn virtually next week. We will continue to share updates through District-level channels, and you will hear directly from your campus administration.

Please know that the decisions we make continue to be guided by our care and concern for our students, staff, and community. Even though power has largely been restored within Fort Bend County and our surrounding areas, the residual impact of the winter storm has caused significant damage to our homes, resources are limited, many are still boiling water, and many of us are being called upon to help and support our loved ones. In this very trying time, we will continue to be resilient, we will continue to stay strong, stay together, and we will continue to navigate this journey in solidarity, as one Fort Bend ISD family.

We will provide further update on Sunday afternoon, so please continue to check your email and the District’s website for updates. Until then, I extend my well-wishes and deepest appreciation to each of you. Stay well.
