Austin High School student named finalist in 2020 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest (5/19/2020)
FORT BEND ISD (May 19, 2020) – Derek Jiang, a junior at Austin High School, was selected as a finalist and among the top 25 students honored in the 2020 Profile in Courage Essay Contest, sponsored by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. This year’s contest received 2,787 entries from students across the country. As a finalist, Jiang received a $1,000 cash award and a certificate of participation.
Jiang was nominated by his teacher, Shannen Soffar, for entry into the contest, which invites U.S. high school students to submit an essay that describes and analyzes an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year President John F. Kennedy was born. In his essay, Jiang profiled Steve Gunderson, a former U.S. Representative from Wisconsin.
