More information: Proposed 2020-21 Instructional Calendar

As Dr. Dupre mentioned in this week’s video update, our Board of Trustees will be asked to adopt the 2020-21 instructional calendar during next week’s Board meeting.

Each year, Fort Bend ISD is committed to developing a comprehensive calendar that supports student instruction and the needs of our students and teachers. Our teachers are at the heart of everything we do, and throughout the calendar development, providing necessary breaks throughout the year is prioritized.

With this in mind, we’d like to point out a few key facts that are not mentioned in this recent Houston Chronicle article:

  • The proposed 2020-21 instructional calendar is nearly identical to the current calendar. While it has a similar start date, it ends the school year prior to Memorial Day, which has been considered favorable by our teachers and other members of the calendar development committee.
  • The earlier start date, prior to the state-mandated fourth Monday in August, allows for additional breaks throughout the year to support student and staff mental wellness.
  • This start date provides for better balance in number of instructional days between the first and second semester.
  • The calendar includes opportunities for professional development with embedded planning throughout the school year. This provides time off for students and job-embedded professional learning and reflection time for teachers.

Fort Bend ISD is appreciative of our teachers who work each day to inspire and equip our students to pursue futures beyond what they can imagine. While we know that no calendar will ever be considered “perfect” by all, we remain committed to a collaborative planning process that considers the needs and wants of our students, teachers, staff, and community members.
