FBISD student Sahana Gade appears on Kids Baking Championship Season 8 (1/17/2020)
FORT BEND ISD (January 17, 2020) – Fort Bend ISD is proud to have one of our very own middle school students, Sahana Gade, selected for Season 8 of the Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship. Sahana, a sixth grader at Quail Valley Middle School’s Gifted and Talented Academy, was one of 12 young bakers from across America selected for the competition that in the end will award one lucky winner $25,000 and the title of Kids Baking Champion.
Bakers selected for the show must range in age from 10 to 13. At age 11, Sahana is the youngest among this season’s 12 contestants and is self-taught. While many contestants audition for the show more than once before being selected, Sahana was chosen on her first attempt.
Sahana was excited to be selected. During the first challenge, she can be heard saying, “I’m so glad to be here. If somebody gave me the opportunity to go to Disney World or come to the Kids Baking Show, I would choose the Kids Baking Show cause it’s awesome!”
On the show, hosts and judges Valerie Bertinelli and Duff Goldman guide the bakers through 10 weeks of challenges that highlight their creativity and baking skills. The kids create various desserts, such as 3D dinosaur cookies, ice cream cone cupcakes and trifles.
The first week’s challenge required bakers to prepare a shag cake. Sahana made a vanilla cake with peanut butter chips, layered with vanilla butter cream and mandarin oranges. After presenting her cake to the judges, they commented, “This is really, really good” and “I love this cake!” She then advanced to the second week’s challenge that asked the bakers to make a Neapolitan dessert. After presenting her dessert, the judges deemed it a little too sweet and, unfortunately, the competition ended for Sahana.
Appearing on the Kids Baking Championship is just one of many successes Sahana has experienced. After competing among students throughout Fort Bend ISD, she was named the 2019 District Spelling Bee Champion. As the winner, she joined 10 other Houston-area students in advancing to the 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Maryland. Her accomplishments earned her recognition by the FBISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Charles Dupre.
As a 5th grader, Sahana was named a finalist in the District Science Fair, as well as the Gifted and Talented Showcase. She is also active in Taekwondo and is currently training for her black belt. To top it off, Sahana, recently launched her own business, Sweet Treats de Sahana, that specializes in custom cakes, cupcakes and macarons.
Sahana lives in Sugar Land with her proud parents, Surya and Sudhaa Gade. You can learn more about the multi-talented middle schooler on social media at:
