Fort Settlement Middle School Named 2015 National School of Character
Fort Settlement Middle School is pleased to announce that Character.org, a national advocate and leader for the character education movement, named Fort Settlement Middle School a 2015 National School of Character. The Schools of Character program recognizes Fort Settlement as a school that has demonstrated its use of character development to drive a positive impact on academics, student behavior, and climate.
Fort
Settlement Middle School has over 1300 students, is located in Sugar Land,
Texas and has been working with Character.org for many years. The current principal
is Michael Hejducek. Under Julie Diaz as principal, the school was named a
State School of Character in both 2012 and again in 2015.
The Schools of Character program is not a competition—but rather an opportunity to
go through a rigorous process of feedback and coaching, as well as recognition
for growth and excellence in the area of character development through
Character.org’s 11 Principles of Effective Character Education framework. Fort Settlement will
hold its designation for five years. Character.org will showcase the school in
an annual publication and on its website. FSMS has also earned the right to use
the National Schools of Character name and logo.
Since its inception, Character.org has awarded over 300 schools
with the distinction of a National School of Character. In 2015, along with Fort Settlement Middle
School, 63 additional schools and 3 districts were named across the United
States.
“Character education is a large part
of our student’s daily lives,” states Julie Diaz, former principal at Fort
Settlement. “We are grateful for Character.org and its efforts to create a
national discussion on the importance of character in education. We are eager
to carry this distinction for years to come and are hopeful our example will
lead other schools in Texas to participate in this process in order to enhance
student’s lives statewide.”
Character.org honored Fort Settlement Middle School in person at
the 22nd National Forum on Character Education, to be held the
weekend of October 15, 2015, in Atlanta, GA. Visit www.character.org to learn
