Student-Owned Devices

SLMS has implemented new procedures related to student use of personal devices in order to promote more face-to-face conversation and positive social interactions. These procedures are aligned with district policy and the use of technology in the learning environment. Because our campus has a greater abundance of laptops from the passage of the 2018 Bond, students are engaging with technology and blended learning without the use of their own device. Our Campus-Based Leadership Team, PTO, and staff took considerable time during the 2018-19 school year to craft a procedure regarding student-owned technology in light of the above-stated goals and the infusion of laptops from the 2018 Bond. We believe this is a balanced approach to meeting students’ needs. Our campus student-owned device procedure is below.

SLMS Student-Owned Device Expectations

  • No student-owned devices may be in students’ possession during the instructional day, with the exception of the last period of the day. Although devices will be in students’ possession during the last period class, they will remain powered off until dismissal
  • Student-owned devices must be powered off and kept in students’ lockers during the instructional day until students retrieve their belongings from their lockers during the passing period preceding the last class of the day
  • District policy remains in effect for “bring your own device to school”
  • Devices will only be permitted in grade-level holding areas (Commons and Gyms) before school starts and after dismissal at the end of the day
  • No social media or taking of photos or videos will be allowed with student-owned devices at any time while students are on campus, including before and after school
  • Earbuds, which are a part of the SLMS school supply list, will be kept in students’ AVID binders, and they will be used in conjunction with school-owned devices during the school day. Any other use of earbuds or headphones is not permitted, even in the grade-level holding areas before school or on campus property after dismissal
  • SLMS staff will model responsible behavior when it comes to personal devices

Students not following these expectations will be subject to the following:

  • First Offense - Device is confiscated and delivered to the front office for end-of-day pickup and recorded in Skyward with a referral
  • Second Offense – Same as first offense
  • Third Offense – Same as first and second offense, and student fined (per policy in the current FBISD Student/Parent Handbook)
  • Fourth Offense – Student device will no longer be allowed to be kept in locker and must be dropped off at the front office each day. Student fined and referral made to administrator

***Students with electronic watches and other “smart devices” must conform to district and school policy; any misuse will follow the same procedures for cell phones and other student-owned devices

***Some students will be exempt from these expectations due to documented health monitoring or medical necessity

***Students may contact their parent/guardian during the school day by obtaining a pass from their current teacher to go to an office where they may use an office phone to make a call. For this reason, it is important for students to know the phone number(s) of their parent/guardian. SLMS maintains a database of parent contact information through Skyward Family Access, but it is only as accurate as the information parents provide. Therefore, parents should keep their contact information up to date

***Parents wishing to contact their children during the instructional day may call (281) 634-3080 in order to have a message delivered to their child

***SLMS is not responsible for the loss or theft of student-owned devices

NOTE: This campus procedure was drafted and approved by the Campus-Based Leadership Team, composed of staff members, parents, and community members.
