Clements High School NJROTC Shines
SUGAR LAND, Texas – The Clements High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) continues to demonstrate excellence both on and off the field, earning top honors in area competitions, securing prestigious scholarships, and serving the community.
In recent military drill competitions, the Clements NJROTC claimed 1st place at Spring High School, Bush High School, and Nimitz High School. They also earned 2nd place at the Tomball High School Drill Meet and placed 2nd at the Area 17 Championship, competing among 8 qualifying teams out of 26 across the region.
Academic and leadership excellence remain a hallmark of the program. Clements cadets qualified for the National Joint Leadership Academic Bowl (JLAB) for the second consecutive year—one of only eight Navy JROTC units nationally to do so out of more than 600. The unit was also selected as Area 17's representative at the National Brain Brawl in San Diego.
Five cadets were awarded Navy ROTC scholarships worth approximately $250,000 each:
- Cadet Lieutenant Commander Sophia Jarlowe – Navy ROTC Scholarship
- Cadet Master Chief Grayson Machmer – Navy ROTC Nurse Scholarship
- Cadet Lieutenant Elfi Van Kuilenburg – Navy ROTC Medical Undergraduate Scholarship
- Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Peikun Wu – Navy ROTC Nurse Scholarship
Cadet Elfi Van Kuilenburg also received three appointments to the U.S. Naval Academy from Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. John Cornyn, and Rep. Troy Nehls.

- Cadet Ensign Khoa Nguyen – United States Marine Corps
- Cadet Petty Officer 2nd Class Carly Fann – United States Navy
- Cadet Lieutenant Junior Grade Peikun Wu – Army National Guard
The unit also placed 3rd in the state for Navy JROTC in the CyberPatriot cybersecurity competition and contributed over 2,000 hours of community and school service this year.
