An Update from Dr. Marc Smith, April 3, 2026

Dear Fort Bend ISD Family,

It's hard to believe that April is already here. This is a busy and exciting time of year filled with spring activities, competitions, testing, recognitions and so much more. Let's stay focused and work together to finish the year strong.

There are a couple of updates from Monday night's board meeting I want to share with you.

2025-26 Budget

I am pleased to share that we will finish this school year better than originally projected due to an increase in state revenue from property value audits and an increase in our SPED allotments.

The combination of increased revenue and our reduction in spending on non-campus-based purchases has provided some short-term stability, but more work is still required to ensure long-term sustainability.

As promised, we have prioritized reducing overall expenditures by determining administrative savings across centralized departments and exercising a strict spending discipline. Next year we will implement strategic reductions in non-campus-based positions from across central administration.

We reallocated some of the revenue saved and invested it in innovative programming and our teacher pipeline to retain and attract students and staff.

I will continue to provide updates as we work toward adopting the 2026-27 school year budget.

New Innovative Opportunities for Middle and High School Students

As I previously communicated, our district is preparing for the 2026-27 school year with the launch of FBISD Redesigned, which includes new opportunities for our students and staff.

The application for our Virtual High School, Middle School Choice Programs and open enrollment at some of our programs and campuses open April 2 through April 24.

For more information and to apply visit www.fortbendisd.com/redesigned. More detailed information will be shared via email in the coming days.

Elementary Attendance Boundary Implementation, Secondary Boundary Planning

Work is moving forward on the district's plan to implement elementary boundary changes that were approved March 9.

We are committed to supporting our students, staff, and families throughout the transition.

Our staff is currently working to confirm student data within the new attendance boundaries to ensure accurate addresses are reflected. Families can expect to receive individualized communication in the coming weeks with details about the next steps, timelines, and the support available to students.

In addition, we held town halls with the staff at each of the campuses that will close, and we are actively working to place them in other positions in the district.

Boundary planning for our secondary schools began this month. You can expect to hear updates throughout the summer.
