Fort Bend ISD adopts 2017-18 calendar, created with increased flexibility under Local Innovation Plan
On March 27, 2017, the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees adopted the 2017-18 calendar. This calendar was created by a calendar committee comprised of District, campus and community members, and includes an August 22 start date. The 2017-18 school year will end on May 31, 2018.
Highlights of the 2017-18 calendar include:
- 174 days of instruction, starting Tuesday, August 22 and ending May 31
- A break for students each month
- A better balance between the fall and spring semesters, with more days of instruction in the first grading period
- Professional learning and planning days for teachers in October, January and April
- A week-long Thanksgiving break
- A two-week Winter break
- President’s Day holiday for students and staff
- A 187-day teacher contract, which includes three days of paid summer professional learning
- Sufficient minutes to cover two bad weather days, in case of inclement weather
Approval of the 2017-18 calendar occurred the same night that the Fort Bend ISD Board of Trustees adopted Fort Bend ISD’s Local Innovation Plan, designating Fort Bend ISD as a District of Innovation and allowing increased flexibilities in the calendar creation.
In the fall of 2016, Fort Bend ISD’s calendar committee, comprised of District, campus and community members, created a draft 2017-18 calendar option that included shorter Thanksgiving and Winter breaks due to the state-mandated late start date and other restrictions. In December, students, parents and staff members had the opportunity to weigh in on the proposed calendar. The District received more than 18,000 surveys that overwhelmingly were against the shortened breaks.
Although it has been customary to approve the District calendar approved in January, the District decided to delay decisions on the 2017-18 calendar until the Local Innovation Committee finalized their Local Innovation Plan and it was approved by the Board of Trustees. This delay allowed the opportunity for the Board to consider a calendar that was more balanced and better met the needs of our students, staff and community.
