My name is Janet Whatley and I am originally from New Mexico, however I have now lived in Texas for over two decades. I married my high school sweetheart 32 years ago, and we have two beautiful, amazing daughters, who are both teachers. Recently, our family of four became a family of five when our oldest daughter married a wonderful man whom we are now delighted to call our son (in-law).
I earned my Bachelor of Accountancy from New Mexico State University and enjoyed a career in the corporate world for several years. Once my own children began to reach school age, I felt a calling to teach, so I returned to school and completed a graduate program in Elementary Education at University of New Mexico.
I started my career in Albuquerque, NM then moved to Sugar Land where I taught at Oyster Creek Elementary for 18 years. I joined the Cornerstone team 3 years ago as a 5th grade ELA, Reading, and Social Studies teacher. I love introducing students to great literature and connecting the stories they read with informational text. In my class we will enjoy literature discussions and debates and will experience a love for reading and learning. I love teaching young writers, and in my class, everyone gets to experience joy and success in writing. Although online learning can present new challenges, our students are learning important organizational, self-discipline, and time and task management skills in a way that students have never had the opportunity to learn them before. Together, we can make this a great and productive experience that we look back on with appreciation and amazement. I love partnering with my students' families to make sure my students are successful and happy, and I look forward to working together to make this a great school year in 2020-2021!
