Hello, My name is Cynthia Byrd and I am a member of the Special Education Department here at Travis High School.  I have 25+ years of teaching experience.  Many of those years have been spent teaching English Language Arts to students at the secondary level, but I have also had the opportunity to help students with many other subjects while working as a Special Education Homebound Teacher and an Online Learning Lab teacher.  I have also had the great opportunity to be a Head Coach for 2 sports - High School Tennis (Boys and Girls) and Girls Soccer. I was honored as a Dulles High School Teacher of the Year Finalist in 2016.  

I am proud to be a graduate of The University of Texas at Austin, where I received a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) with a double major in management and marketing.  After working in the banking and business world for almost 15 years, I returned to school and completed 42 additional college hours to become an English teacher.  It was the best career move I could have made!  I love seeing young adults grow and learn.  

At Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas I loved reading and studying literature.  I was Co-Captain of the tennis team with my sister and an officer in the Bisonette's Drill Team.   I am certified to teach secondary English, reading, ESL, and special education students.  I am trained in dyslexia intervention, and one of my teaching goals is to inspire young people to love reading as much as I do.  My teachers helped me have a better life because they shared their passion for learning.  I want to do the same for my students.
