Ms. Karen Sfara

This is my 15th year with Fort Bend ISD, and my 5th year at James Patterson Elementary. I am excited about being the Math Specialist and working with our teachers and students. I have had the privilege of being a teacher to many students on our campus and have formed a bond with the students and their families. As a Math Specialist, I provide Tier 3 intervention to students in grades 2 - 5. Additionally, I coach teachers on best practices. We plan, build assessments, learn new strategies, and step out of our comfort zone to guide student achievement. In addition, I serve as a math liaison between the central administration and the building staff, providing teaching and assessment training seminars to campus staff and assisting administration with the implementation of new educational programs.

I graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston. As a proud U of H Cougar, I understood the high expectations warranted by a college of “Carnegie Tier One” distinction, which only four colleges in Texas hold. In addition to acquiring my teaching certificate, I am ESL (English as a Second Language) certified, Reading Recovery (a reading intervention program) certified, and am trained for our Gifted and Talented learners.

My philosophy in teaching is that all students/teachers can learn when given the specific tools needed. I believe that every student is successful in their own way. My classroom promotes a safe and healthy learning environment that motivates each student to reach their fullest potential. Through this positive climate, students are more confident, and their performance is a direct reflection of their abilities and perseverance. If there is one word to define me, it is the word, “dedicated”. I believe that every student can learn, no matter the obstacles.

I am also a Professional Learning Lead, a Progress Learning Ambassador, was part of the Curriculum Writing project, was a member of Ft. Bend ISD’s Master Facility Plan Committee, and their Steering Committee. Some of my favorite hobbies include hiking, camping, gardening, learning about different cultures/religions, and traveling.
