Hightower High School Sports Medicine employs two athletic trainers who provide care for emergent, acute, and chronic injuries and medical conditions. Services can be broken down into the following categories:
- Injury Prevention
- Recognition and Management of Athletic Injury
- Rehabilitation of Athletic Injury
- Emergency Medical Care
Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. As a part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

Ms. Essence Ephran (Miss E)
Essence Ephran, MS, ATC, LAT is her 1st year as head athletic trainer of Hightower High School. She is originally from small town Wharton, Texas, but found her passion for athletic training at her alma mater George Bush High School. She graduated from Texas State University with a Bachelor's of Science in Athletic Training. Essence is passionate about injury prevention and rehabilitation, and strives to help her student aides find their passion. When she's not standing sideline of the field or court, she spends her time cooking, reading, and traveling.

Mr. David Berrones (Coach David)
David is entering his third year as the assistant athletic trainer at HHS and his 8th year in the profession. Contracted to HHS through partnership with the Houston Methodist hospital, he previously served as assistant athletic trainer at Stafford MSD ('18-'19)and head athletic trainer at Edna ISD ('14-'18). David was born in Houston, Texas and graduated from Cypress Creek High School. He earned his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology from Stephen F. Austin State University. He then earned a Master's degree in Athletic training from Texas A&M University. David is an active member in good standing with the National Athletic Trainers Association and Southwest Athletic Trainers' Association. In his free time, David enjoys playing golf, cooking, and spending time with family.
