    Practice:

    Every Monday, Wednesday, & Thursday on Teams & Discord with Event Specific Coaches.

     

    *Practices are run by event specific coaches, team Officers and Captains; you are responsible for your understanding of the rules, event, and competition.*

     

    Purpose:
    The Dulles High School Speech and Debate Team is dedicated to teaching students the importance of communication, research, and critical thinking skills. Students will have an opportunity to learn skills that are vital to understanding major issues that impact our world and discussing their ideas in a logical and mature fashion.

    Major Events & Activities:
    1-3 Tournaments each month from September to February. The team participates in tournaments in the Fort Bend, Houston, Katy and Rosenberg areas. Students also have the opportunity to qualify for several state and national tournaments that take place in March, April and May. A tournament schedule with specific dates is handed out at the beginning of the school year.

    Meetings:
    Every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:30-5:30 during debate season. TBA during other times. All meetings are held on Teams or Discord and are communicated through the Band App: band.us/@DullesDebate. Major messages come from Debate Remind.

    Requirements:
    Attend ALL mandated meetings and practices. Students competing in their first year of debate are expected to attend at least 4 tournaments throughout the year. Students who are in their second, third or fourth year of debate are expected to attend at least 6 tournaments. There is a supply fee to participate in debate. However, we do realize that there are extenuating circumstances that affect some students. Please do not hesitate to discuss the supply fee with the sponsor at the beginning of the year.

     

    Dues & Forms:

    Forms are due ASAP. You cannot travel or compete without completed forms. Get an information and form packet from Coach Burke. 

    Debate requires significant funds for traveling and tournament fees.
    To participate students are asked to post $250 dues.
    - $250 to "DHS Debate Parent Org"- Due to CoVID, dues will be paid directly to Booster for 2020-21 season; see Band App for payment directions.
    If you cannot pay the due, but still wish to participate in competition, email dullesdebatecoach@gmail.com ASAP. 

    Overnight & Independent travel tournaments are optional and require additional fees. 

    ***Incoming students for 2020-2021: If you plan to take the Debate I class next year and you have previous debate experience from a middle school program or another school, please email Coach Burke (dullesdebatecoach@gmail.com) with subject "Debate Class 2020-2021, your name and a summary of your previous debate experience including any camps you plan to attend this summer. This will help place you into the correct class period of debate when possible***
