Bachelor of Music in Music Studies, Honors International Distinction Kodály Level I & II Certification

Ms. Alexia Barrera

About Me

Howdy! I'm Ms. B. and I am one of the music teachers at Neill Elementary!  This is my fifth year teaching, and I'm overjoyed to be the director of the Notably Neill Choir Club and to serve as a Coach and Co-Coordinator for UIL A+ Academics!

I have always loved all facets of the arts (especially music) since I was a little girl, and I was so lucky to grow up in cities that really celebrated the arts in both Mexico AND in the US!  Though I've been singing since I was a toddler, I began my music studies when I joined choir in middle school, which continued throughout high school and eventually became my main focus as I embarked in attaining my undergraduate degree as a Roadrunner in the University of Texas at San Antonio.  While studying at the UTSA, I was given the opportunity to study in Italy for six months, where I learned how to speak Italian (alongside my English and Spanish fluency), studied music history and took voice lessons from the country where opera originated, and experienced la dolce vita as I completed my international distinction from UTSA's Honors College. My love for music knows no bounds, and it is truly a treat to get to help people of all ages develop their own love for it while gaining an understanding of how to read and write it.  Since graduating college, I have been fortunate to have taught students from ages 3 to 48, particularly due to my work with the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio and private lessons studios.

In my classroom, all students are loved and approached with the respect that I hope to receive in return.  I focus on social-emotional learning, being a kind person above all else, and learning to embrace life with an open heart, an open mind, and open arms.  I firmly believe that music is a universal force that unites us.

Now that I have been teaching for half of a decade, I am proud to be Level I & II certified in the Kodály method, which has been integral in my development of fun lessons that are filled with folk songs and dances, multicultural music, celebration of diversity, SO MANY GAMES, and even feature occasional "visits" from characters and/or music from our kiddos' favorite video games and TV/film (mostly Fortnite and cartoons)!  I hope to keep creating fun and interactive lessons for us this year, and I am EAGER to make some awesome Longhorn music at Neill this school year!
